I had NO idea water could KILL me!

That's right, I said it could kill me. You see, a little over a month ago, I was diagnosed with Acute Kidney Failure. Along with the kidney stones I had to pass, painfully.

I learned all kinds of things from that damned nephrologist. Such as: my kidneys were not processing potassium, or water. I had to start taking phosphate blockers. I had to limit the amount of liquids I put in my body, because my kidneys were apparently opposed to filtering those fluids so the pee can flow. These were among the many things that I set upon, at the doctors insistence.

No more beef, chicken or salmon....too much protein.
No more high potassium fruits or veggies.
No more high sodium foods or liquids...they make you retain water.

I was so limited on water/liquids, that I started every day with a set amount. When that ran out, I went to bed, lest I be dying of thirst. I had sugar free hard candies (to deter thirst). I was told to brush my teeth every couple of hours (to deter thirst).

Life pretty much sucked. Until I was told it was a misdiagnosis. Yes, you read that correctly. They missed what was causing my symptoms, and the slight blood work alterations. It was something else altogether. I don't want to get into that one...its another post entirely.

I just wanted you to know that I am ok...now. And I can drink all the water I want to again. I missed it. A lot.

toodles....Sandi

How awful for you! Water is such a paradox. We need it to survive-but then it does have the power to do such destructive things. Misdiagnosis? I think some water torture is in order!

How scary and difficult it must have been to have that diagnosis! I'm so glad they were wrong!

Wow! I could not imagine having to limit my water intake. I love drinking water, it is my go-to drink of choice!

I'm glad you can drink it again. And I hope the actual diagnosis isn't worse.

That is my idea of hell. I love salt. A life without popcorn.... I don't know if I could go on.

I hope the real diagnoses isn't too serious.

Great piece, you had me cursing right along with you.

No salmon, veggies or water! But then you have to relearn everything that you've ever read about what you should be eating! I'm very happy to hear you get to drink water again. I will try harder to appreciate my 8 cups a day.

Ugh, reading that you went through all of that and that they had misdiagnosed you really made me angry. Hate that, and now I'm worrying for what really might be wrong.
Hope you are doing okay and your post reminded me that I take a lot for granted.

OH my GOSH! A misdiagnoses?!! I can not even imagine. It is amazing that something that is necessary for life (water) could ever need to be limited in that way. I am mad at the doctor that you put you through that, but SO glad that you are ok!
